ROSES
I am going to talk about Roses today. I never knew there were so many different ones. The different ones are each put in a certain class. This is very exciting to me. These flowers came from China 5,000 years ago. I will tell you the pros and cons of each one, if you would like to add a rose to your garden 🙂
I will start off with the Rambler, one of my favorites. (In the picture above)
Rambler- These are romantic covering small structures and they love to climb. Pros:They are romantic. Great for a sitting area and will cover imperfections with thousands of beautiful blossoms. Cons:Very little scent. Only can place where they can climb and they are rare to come back the following year.
Miniature- A lot of you have heard of this one. But what you didn’t know is they are a hybrid. They are less than a foot tall, can take full sun and have no native range. Pros:They are very pretty. They do well in containers and gardens. Do come back yearly. Cons:Need lots of attention if growing in pots.
Bourbon-this is called the old rose, found in Africa. Pros:They bloom in Autumn and can be used for hedging. Cons:Do not handle the cold very well and can mildew in a wet climate.
Moss- You would not think of this being a rose. But it has a full blossom, are sticky and have green hairs that grow on the buds. Pros:Smells really good. Cons:These are rare so they are hard to find.
Scots Rose Hybrid-These are wild roots, that have a single petal blossom and only bloom once a year. Pros:They are carefree and look awesome in the wild. Cons:Can spread under ground and do not put next to pathways because of the thorns.
Rugosa-This species came from Asia, having wrinkled leaves and reminds us of wild beach roses. Pros:They are scented and can with stand harsh weather. Cons:Be careful in small areas, they spread fast.
Hybrid Musk-One of the most beloved roses today. It has a honey-musk scent with lots of medium roses. Pros:They re-bloom and have soft pastel colors. Cons:Watch where you put them because in warm areas they can climb.
English Rose-In 1950 David Austin mixed old roses with hybrid roses, for repeat blooms and disease resistance. Pros:Romantic and good in small places. Cons:Need to check with a Nursery to see if they will be good in your area.
Tea-Everytime I see this I think of a nice glass of tea! But they are called this because they were shipped across the ocean with the tea trade with Asia. Pros:They smell lightly of tea leaves. Cons:Keep out of the wind because they are weak.
Hybrid Perpetual-These were in style in the 19th century. Ladies wore these large full flowers on their hats. Pros:Big scenty flowers, that re-bloom. Cons:Does not 2nd bloom for very long.
Floribunda-These are often planted in public because they easily bloom. Pros:Blooms all year long, bright colors and disease resistant. Cons:Not much of a scent.
Shrub Rose-These don’t fit in any of the major classes and have a mixed heritage. They grow over 4 feet tall!!! Pros:They are big and can be a focal point of a flower bed. Cons:They take up a lot of room and are high maintenance.
Species Hybrid-They are five petaled flowers, that cross pollinated on their own. Pros:Bloom early in the year and are easy to grow. Cons:Bushes can be large.
Hybrid Tea-Being the most grown rose, they have an attractive long stem. They were found by accident in 1867. Pros:They are good for attaching to arbors and the flowers are loose. Cons:Bushes need to be pruned and they are prone to fungi.
